A Report On Translating Guangshan Huagu Drama

Guangshan Huagu Drama is a kind of rare drama in Xinyang,Henan Province.It was regarded as the key rescuing project of folk cultural relics in Henan in 2004 and was included in the fourth national nonmaterial cultural heritage list in 2014.As a distinctive folk custom in Henan areas,it contains profound cultural connotation.The translation and publicity of it is one of the important ways for international community to understand Chinese folk culture,which plays a crucial part in promoting the communication between different cultures.Therefore,the translation of Guangshan Huagu Drama is more and more important.However,the English version about Guangshan Huagu Drama has not been found yet in several famous databases and network resources.In this translation practice,the author attempts for the first time to translate some parts of Guangshan Huagu Drama which is edited by Yang Liping and published by Henan People's Publishing House.In this way,the author hopes to introduce Guangshan Huagu Drama to the outside world,highlight the Chinese folk culture and accelerate its steps toward the world stage.The translation of Guangshan Huagu Drama should be different from other materials,and the proper theoretical guidance and translation methods can help to translate Guangshan Huagu Drama faithfully and smoothly so as to better spread the Chinese folk culture toward the world.In this translation practice,the author hopes to translate the chosen contents of the text and analyze some translation methods fit for the translation of Chinese folk culture under the guidance of Functionalist Skopos Theory and with the purpose of spreading Chinese culture to the target language readers.Meanwhile,the author focuses on some difficult points of vocabularies,sentences,paragraphs and characteristic culture in the text and summarizes specific translation methods,such as foreignization,domestication,literal translation,literal translation plus explanation,free translation,transliteration,transliteration plus explanation and annotation.This report aims to overcome the obstacles caused by cultural differences between Chinese and English,introduce Guangshan HuaguDrama to the outside world and promote Chinese folk culture toward the world stage.What's more,it also aims to provide references for the translation of this kind of texts and deepen the translators' understanding of the Functionalist Skopos Theory,so as to improve their translation abilities and level.This report divides into six chapters:(1)Introduction,(2)Theoretical guidance,(3)Task description,(4)English translation study of Guangshan Huagu Drama under the guidance of Skopos Theory,(5)Translation methods of the characteristic culture of Guangshan Huagu Drama,(6)Summary.
