Vagueness,as the basic feature of language,is universal in our daily communication. When we communicate with each other,we always consciously use vague language to achieve communicative goals, and such situation often happens in diplomatic activities as well.In diplomatic activities, diplomats often intentionally use vague language in order to maintain friendly relationships or avoid conflicts with other countries.Since diplomatic interpreting plays an important role in diplomatic activities, how to effectively interpret vague language in diplomatic settings has become a new topic. In this thesis, the author attempts to study interpretation strategies of vague language from the perspective of functional equivalence so as to enrich the studies on the theory of functional equivalence as well as help diplomatic interpreting learners better cope with the interpretation of vague language in diplomatic interpreting and thus improve the quality of diplomatic interpreting. This thesis analyzes major classifications of vague language in diplomatic interpreting and the corresponding interpretation strategies from functional equivalence perspective. The press conference held by the premier is a typical diplomatic activity and is also the focus of both Chinese and foreign press. This thesis classifies vague language in diplomatic interpreting at lexical level and syntactic level based on the interpretation transcripts of Premier Li Keqiang's press conferences from 2013 to 2016.Vague language at lexical level includes hedges, deixis, and vague words, while vague language at syntactic level includes negation, figure of speech, and non-subject sentences. Then from functional equivalence perspective, the author attempts to analyze the interpretation strategies according to each category based on typical examples and concludes that literal interpretation is most adopted and substitution, addition, omission, explanation, and adaption of the original sentence structure are also widely used.
