In2013Shanghai Forum, the author has a lot of misinterpretation and missinginformation due to the fact that the author does not know how to deal with vaguelanguage frequently used in the speech of “China Financial Reform”. After carefulexamination of the original text, the author has found that the vague language used by thespeaker can be categorized mainly into four groups: polysemy, euphemism, pun andlogical incoherence. This paper focuses on the Chinese to English interpretation of the speech “ChinaFinancial Reform” and then makes comparative analysis between the originalinterpretation and the revised version according to the four categories.Through comparative analysis, the author comes to the conclusion that “interpretivetheory” is the most effective way for interpreters to deal with vague language, becauseinterpretation is not about language decoding, but a dynamic process in which interpretermakes sense of source message and then represents it in target language. Therefore, thepriority of interpreter is to grasp the meaning and the intention of speaker. Since meaningis the result of both language and context, interpreter needs to know language knowledge, cognitive knowledge and cognitive context. To better understand the meaning of speaker, interpreter also needs to know well aboutthe background knowledge in finance, interpretation skills and how to deal with pressure. This paper is based on the comparative analysis of source language and the author’sinterpretation with the purpose to help interpreters deal with vague language and improveoutput quality.
