Tour commentary is a tool that tour guide can use it to spread ideas and knowledge to tourists. And a good tour commentary can not only make tourists know the scenic spots, local customs and practices but also promote cultural exchange. This thesis, based on Cognitive Load Theory proposed by John Sweller and text typology, taking the day-tour commentary of Changsha as an example, tries to study impacts of Cognitive Load Theory for C-E translation of tour commentaries in practices and explores a new way to translate tour commentary from Chinese to English. This thesis is made up of four parts:task inscription, process description, text features and its translation on the basis of Cognitive Load Theory, and summary. The third chapter is the key part of the whole thesis which is about the case analysis based on Cognitive Load Theory.Tour commentary is a compound text with the combination of tourism information and appeal for tourists. As for foreign tourists who visit China for the first time, there are too many cognitive loads during their travel and we need to control the amount of loads. The knowledge level of tourists and tour commentary should be considered by tour guides in order to reduce the amount of Intrinsic Cognitive Loads. The translation should be improved and better presented to reduce the amount of Extraneous Cognitive Loads. At the same time,we should help tourists know these tourism attractions by their own understanding in order to increase their Germane Cognitive Loads. The writer thinks it is necessary to control the cognitive load and use different kinds of translation skills such as amplification, omission, conversion, division to do a better translation.
