This essay focuses on making a research of “look”-related verbs from the Northern and Southern Dynasties and Sui Dynasty to Tang and the Five Dynasties, mainly using the modern semantic field theory, through some research methods like the quantitative statistics and qualitative analysis, synchronic description combined with diachronic investigation, which provide the members of “look”-related verbs' semantic field in this stage with description, comparison and analysis in order to summarise the development of these members from the Northern and Southern Dynasties and Sui Dynasty to Tang and the Five Dynasties. This essay explores the two period—the Northern and Southern Dynasties and Sui Dynasty and Tang and the Five Dynasties respectively, selecting strong oral materials in each period and investigate “look”-related verbs which mean actions connecting with the specific and abstract among these literatures, describing and inspecting these the conditions of specific application. At the same time, this essay makes a diachronic comparison about “look”-related verbs between these two periods to explore the replacement of these verbs from the Northern and Southern Dynasties and Sui Dynasty through the semantic feature, functions, combination form, using frequency and distribution to explore characteristics and reasons of the evolution of “look”-related verbs' semantic field in these periods.More specifically, there are four parts in this essay.Initially,in the aspect of theoretical method, this essay mainly expounds the research status and meaning of “look”-related verbs' semantic field, and it defines the range of “look”-related verbs, establishing the contents and objects, elaborating the research methods and goals, illustrating the materials selection, the research's difficulties and innovation points and so on.Subsequently,in the aspect of landscape orientation, this essay describes synchronicly the using conditions of members of semantic field. This part explores “look”-related verbs in the two periods, investigating and analyzing the semantic feature, frequency of occurrence, functions, combination ability, and distribution of the members of the semantic field in representative literatures of each time.Especially, this part makes a comparison to the members of the semantic field between the North and South and analyzes the regional differences of the members of the semantic field in the Northern and Southern Dynasties and Sui Dynasty.Thirdly,in the aspect of longitudinal investigation, the essay systemizes diachronicly the development of members of semantic field. This part makes a comparison and analysis to “look”-related verbs from the Northern and Southern Dynasties and Sui Dynasty to Tang and the Five Dynasties, and displays the inheritance and extension, abundance and development, degradation and decline in these periods.Ultimately,in the aspect of macroscopic principles, this essay summarizes the features and reasons of historical evolution of “look”-related verbs' semantic field, systemizing the development of “look”-related verbs' semantic field from the Northern and Southern Dynasties and Sui Dynasty to Tang and the Five Dynasties, concluding the features and regulations in the diachronic development from three aspects—substitution of core words, tendency of complex tone and the evolution of combining form, elucidating the reasons of evolution from the Northern and Southern Dynasties and Sui Dynasty to Tang and the Five Dynasties, through the demand of ideographic function, the impacts of language contact, the restriction of classical Chinese seperation and the internal adjustment of lexical system. From the standpoint of “semantic field” theory,we can clealy understand dynamic trajectory of “look”-related verbs' semantic field in this stage and display further the important meaning of “semantic field” theory for Chinese lecicological research through synchronic description and diachronic comparison to “look”-related verbs' semantic field from the Northern and Southern Dynasties and Sui Dynasty to Tang and the Five Dynasties.
