Report On English Translation Of Two Sections In Restriction And Impact Of The Population Aging On China's Population Development Strategy

The population aging problem is a significant challenge for most of the countries in the world in the 21 st century.As a basic variable,the demographic problem has affected the development of society and economy.China,as a big country,is confronting severe population aging problem in this new century,confining China's development in economy,politics,culture and society,etc.,with grave impact on them.The exploration of China's population aging problem is important not only to finding ways for solving the problem,but also to supplying a reference to which other countries in the world can make.The book Renkou Laolinghua Dui Zhongguo Renkou Fazhan Zhanlue De Zhiyue He Yingxiang(Restriction and Impact of the Population Aging on China's Population Development Strategy)is the final achievement of a research project supported by the National Social Sciences Fund of China,which is a collection of articles,serving as a reference for decision-making on the national level.It is a candidate book listed for application for the projects supported by the Chinese Fund for the Humanities and Social Sciences.Its English translation will be conducive to the foreign transmission of the academic achievements made by Chinese scholars on demography and further to academic exchanges between China and other countries.Up to now,it has not been rendered into English version,and therefore its English translation is both necessary and original.The object of translation in the present project is two sections of the book,namely,the “Introduction” and the ninth article in it,with over ten thousand Chinese characters in total.On the basis of her translating experience,the translator writes her translation report.These two parts constitute the content of her thesis.The “Introduction” of the book is made of several parts,concerning “research background,significance and methods”,“the basic content,major findings,significant viewpoints and suggestions on policies”,and “academic innovation and social evaluation of the research project”.The article “Suggestions on Policies for China Realizing a Strategic Balance between the Population Size Pressure and the Population Aging Pressure” concerns “China to be confronted simultaneously with tremendous pressures from its population size and population aging”,“The significance of a strategic balance between the two population pressures”,“The best option and the only way of realizing a strategic balance between the two population pressures: to relax the birth control policy moderately and gradually,with the family planning policy as the premise”,and “Suggestions on policies”.The writing of the book is featured by conciseness and explicitness,strong in objective,logic,informative,and argumentative exposition,which indicates a typical academic writing style,belonging to the category of expressionistic texts.In translating the Chinese original text,the translator adopts the main strategy of an expressionistic approach,laying emphasis on analysis and reproduction of the original theoretical,linguistic,and stylistic aspects.In regard to the theoretical aspect,the translator tries to render the original in an objective,complete,and well-knit way.In language,she tries to make sure that the English version can be accurate,smooth,and explicit.Regarding the stylistic features,she pursues reproduction of the original concise,uniform,and unified features.Thus,by reproducing the original in the three aspects,the translator renders the English version with as much affinity as possible with the original.In translating the details of the original,she applies methods flexibly with an orientation to the overall translation effect.The global translation aim of the present project is at reaching the standard for publication of translated academic works in English,in the hope of helping the outside world understand the current demographic situation of China and the possible solutions.
