A Report On The Chinese Translation Of Water Pollution News

Nowadays,attention has been paid to the issues of environmental problems including soil pollution,air pollution and water pollution in the world.And water pollution is of great concern.It has severely affected human's daily life in some regions.The authorities,in and abroad,have intensified efforts to prevent and control water pollution.The author of this report chose 27 English texts from water pollution column in http://www.uswaternews.com and translated them into Chinese.On the basis of the translation,the present report is written so as to analyze the translation activity.The report mainly consists of four parts: the translation task description,the translation procedure description,the case analysis of the translation and the conclusion.The translation task description part introduces the background and the features of the task.The translation procedure description part presents the preparations before translation,the translation procedure and the matters after translation.In the case analysis part,the translation problems are discussed concerning with the word and phrase translation,the long sentence translation and coherence of the target text.Accordingly,solutions to these problems are discussed.In translating the words and phrases,due to the lack of background knowledge,the translator found it rather difficult in determining the equivalent Chinese expressions.In revising the translated draft,the translator tried to understand the specific word or phrase in context and then to get the specific equivalent Chinese expression by surfing the net.In translating the long English sentences,the translator felt it difficult in understanding the structure and logical relationship of the clauses and phrases.In the revision process,the translator split the sentence into several parts and re-expressed the whole meaning in Chinese.The reason why the first draft was not coherent enough is that the translator was concerned too much with the word-by-word and/or sentence-by-sentence translation.That is,the translator neglected the relationship of the discourse,making thetranslation incoherent.In the revision process,in addition to making each Chinese sentence be equal with the original in information,the translator tried to make Chinese sentences be coherent with each other on the basis of their logical relationship.In the conclusion part,the unsolved problems are analyzed so that the translator can improve her own translation competence in the future learning and practice.It is hoped that this report can provide some reference for the translation activities concerned.
