Learning the history of Western art is an effective way for us to learn about western culture. In recent years, though translation plays an increasingly important role in the cultural exchanges between the East and the West, the translation of Western art history hardly raises people's attention. This thesis is a translation practice report on the English-Chinese translation of Oxford Art History: Medieval Art(Introduction and Chapter 1).In this thesis, the author makes a detailed description of the whole translation process concerning auxiliary tools, acquirement of parallel texts, and terminology;discusses the key points which should be emphasized and the difficulties encountered in the translation process along with the solutions;summarizes some translation techniques dealing with the translation of proper names, abstract expressions and long sentences;discusses the reasons why the translation of art history is full of mistakes, and points out the qualities needed for a qualified translator dealing with art history translation in hope that this thesis provides a good reference for translators and MTI students who will be involved in art history translation.
