The Belt and Road Initiative has brought China and other countries great opportunities for development.Cities with a long history like Xi'an need to be known more by the people all over the world.Against such a backdrop,Sui-Tang Chang'an: A Study in the Urban History of Medieval China,an English monograph published in 2000 enjoys enormous academic value.It is not only conducive to the development of Xi'an from all aspects,but also referable for researchers at home and abroad to study Chang'an history.Therefore,the author decides to translate the Chapter One and Chapter Two of the book with a hope to introduce the book to more people.The core of the translation theory of Peter Newmark is text typology theory.Newmark categorizes all texts into Expressive Function,Informative Function and Vocative Function.According to Newmark's text type theory,the source text is typical informative text.On the basis of the translation practice Sui-Tang Chang'an: A Study in the Urban History of Medieval China,the author analyzes the source text.The source text is informative type,which requires the target text to be faithful to the source text and to convey the information directly and completely.Therefore the author adopts the translation strategies such as domestication and foreignization and the translation methods such as free translation,literal translation,semantic translation,back translation to guide the translation with an aim of achieving the semantic equivalence,guaranteeing the translation accuracy and bringing target text readers what the writer really thinks and expresses.This report consists of introduction,task description,translation process,case analysis and conclusion.The first chapter is an introduction.The second chapter includes the translator's analysis of the source text from lexical,syntax and text and the requirements of the entrusting party.The third chapter is to introduce the relevant work before translation,while translation and after translation.The fourth chapter is case analysis.In this chapter,difficulties in translating the word of locality,four-word phrases,complicated sentences and passive voice are analyzed and free translation,literal translation,back translation,semantic translation,addition and combination translation methods and skills are applied to solve these difficulties.Through the translation practice,the author learns more about Xi'an's history,improves her translation ability,and hopes to make some possible contributions to the publicity of Xi'an City.
