Guided by the grammar guidelines of new Chinese proficiency test known as new HSK Levels 1~3 syllabus,this thesis examined the grammar items of 15 selected sets of new HSK Levels 1~3 past exam papers.Among the main items examined were the number,distribution and frequency of grammatical rules.Through its descriptive statistical analysis,the examination was designed to determine if the grammar questions were designed in accordance with the grammar guidelines of the new HSK syllabus.It was also designed to locate any deviances between the questions and the guidelines.Based on its findings,this thesis made recommendations for setting future grammar questions and also for further improvement of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.The thesis consists of four parts.Part One is introduction,which mainly covers the research objective,background and significance of the thesis.And it also summarizes the status and achievements of HSK research at home and abroad.In addition,the paper further introduces its general framework and theoretical methods.The second part of the thesis identifies and categorizes all the grammar guidelines of the new HSK syllabus.After providing an overview of the new HSK outline,the thesis offers its unique identification and categorization of grammar guidelines in light of characteristics of categorized grammar rules.Through a descriptive analysis of the number,distribution and frequency of all the itemized grammar rules,the third part of the thesis investigates and analyzes the grammar questions in the new HSK1 ~ 3 test papers.The fourth part of the thesis is conclusion.It summarizes the whole thesis,and puts forward some recommendations about the new HSK grammar,including suggested amendments of the grammar syllabus,and advice on designing questions.The thesis ends with an elaboration of its limitations and recommendations for further studies.
