This is a translation report on chapter five and chapter six in the first part of the book Language and Culture –Contexts in Translating. The author of the book is Nida.Nida talked about his own opinions about the relationship among language, culture and translation, and the content is constructive. With the beneficial guidance of the supervisor, the reporter improved and finished the translation of the original text and the reporter applied the functional equivalence theory to finish the translation projects.According to the understanding and translation of the two chapters, the author expressed the exact meaning and culture of the original text in the translation which is guided by the functional equivalence theory. At the lexical level, the reporter applied translation techniques like “amplification, omission, conversion and negation” to deal with the lexical problems. At the syntactical level, the reporter followed the original order of the original sentences, besides, the reporter rearranged the order in English to Chinese translation. For example,if it is a passive voice in English,if we want to translate it into Chinese,we need to translate it into active voice. If it is a clause,we can change the order and divide the sentences. At the textual level, the reporter used the translation strategies like division and restructuring to analyze the text.Translators should also pay attention to the logic and transfer mode. Finally, the author hoped the translation practice could provide some experience and references for the future translation. The translation report is made up of five parts. The information of the book, the author, and the translation task is mainly offered in the first part.In the second part, the author mainly introduced Nida's functional equivalence theory, including the principles of the functional equivalence theory and the development of the functional equivalence theory.Part three is the case analysis. It is the most important part.In part three, the reporter mainly analyzed how to apply the functional equivalence theory into the practice. At the same time, the translation techniques are discussed at the lexical, syntactic and textual levels. In the last part of the report, the reporter gives a conclusion which contains the translation problems during the translation practice and the experience and lessons that the reporter has gained during the translation process.
