In a communicative activity, there are many problem triggers that impede English-to-Chinese simultaneous interpreting.Among all the triggers, high speech rate exerts great pressure on interpreters, who have to listen, analyze, memorize and produce information in the target language within a short time span. This task is very demanding,so interpreters will resort to different strategies to facilitate their work. This thesis intends to analyze the strategies used under the high-speech-rate condition based on Daniel Gile's Effort Model theory and the Interpretive Theory. The material of the experiment is a speech on learning approaches downloaded from TED website.Eight graduate students from the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation of BFSU are tested. The experiment lasts about 11 minutes. The author transcripts their interpreted versions, and then selects certain paragraphs for detailed analysis. The results show that high English speech rate do have influences on the choices of strategies during interpreting, and a balanced way of using strategies will help interpreters perform better.Hopefully, this thesis provides a new angle for simultaneous interpretation studies.Interpreters could use strategies in a more balanced way to improve their performance.
