Simultaneous interpreting(SI)of opening speeches is a significant part of international conferences, marking the beginning of a conference.Delivered by important attendees of the conference, opening speeches illustrate a series of information about the conference, playing an essential role in announcing the contents, facilitating the progress and creating certain atmosphere of the conference.Consequently the study on SI of opening speeches has gradually become a hot topic in interpreting process study. This thesis focuses on three aspects, including the difficulties during the SI of opening speeches, reasons that cause these difficulties and coping strategies.Aiming at exploring the energy distribution of interpreters and strategies applied in SI of opening speeches, this thesis carries out a descriptive study on specific case with Gile's Effort Model being the tool of theoretical analysis. The 9th Great Tumen Initiative(GTI)Tourism Board Meeting was organized by UNDP GTI Secretariat and hosted by China National Tourism Administration,CPC Committee Arxan City, and Arxan Municipal People's Government in 2016.Opening speeches delivered by three speakers during this meeting are taken as the case, the features of which and the performance of interpreters during SI are analyzed. Two of the speeches are interpreted from Chinese to English and the other from English to Chinese. The data of study is an audio file of the three opening speeches and the SI of them. The duration of it is 28minutes and 32seconds,and the transcription is about 6,393 words. The SI was carried out by two male interpreters from a professional interpreting company from Beijing. The study holds that(1)due to the tight conference agenda, opening speeches are delivered at a fast tempo with the density of information increasing;(2)the interpreters are faced with heavy workload of processing a large amount of information as well as mobilizing the atmosphere;(3)misinterpretation and long pauses occurred several times. The study argues that(1)Anticipation and pre-interpreting preparation can reduce the energy distribution in Listening and Analysis;(2)Syntactic linearity helps reduce the demand for energy distribution in Short-term Memory;(3)Omission of redundancy is helpful to reduce the energy distribution in Production. The application of the above strategies can to some extent help interpreters reduce the stress of energy distribution in SI thus improving the quality of SI.
