In May 2008,Heilongjiang Province Institute of Cultural Relics and Research Center for Chinese Frontier Archaeology of Jilin University conducted a special Paleolithic archaeological survey in the Hailang River basin,a tributary of Mudanjiang River.8 Paleolithic sites were found in the survey.Up to now, remains from Paleolithic sites such as Yanglinxishan,Yanglinnanshan,Shuangfengbeishan,Dalongtoushan,Xiaolongtoushan,Manchengnanshan,Paotaishan sites, have been researched already. And at present, investigations and studies of paleolithic remains in the Hailang River basin are still conducted. In this paper,Late Paleolithic sites in the Hailang River Basin is studied as a case, trying to identify and analyze pollen samples extracted from soil of these sites. The conclusion is compared with other remians from sites nearby aiming at speculating the paleo environmental background in the Hailang River basin, which was sparse grassland, and then gradually conversed to arable land. And the climate gradually changed from warm and humid to cold and dry. Moreover, through the analysis of stone tools unearthed and the similar sites, subsistence of local people was initially recognized. The conclusion can be drawn that ancient people made a full use of local stone material for large-scale manufacture. The subsistence here maybe depended on fishing and hunting economy, with initial tendency of early residence. The significance of this paper lies in filling the blank of the late Paleolithic Man-land relationship in the Hailang River Basin.
