The prefaces and postscripts of seal books,as one kind of review,are important ways to understand the information of seal books,the thoughts of sealengravers and the theory of seal cutting theory.The seal art has moved to prosperity and laid the foundation for the emergence of a large number of prefaces and postscripts of seal books in the Qianjia periods of Qing Dynasty,with the comprehensive impacts of improvement of seal materials and tools,the promotion of collections,and the higher social status of sealengravers.This paper analyzes the prefaces and postscripts of seal books in the periods of Qianlong(1736-1779)and Jiaqing(1796-1820)in Qing Dynasty.It talks about the progress,origin and style by analyzing and comparing the existing collections of prefaces and postscripts in the Qianjia periods.By analyzing the aesthetic orientation,such as making-replica exceedingly and admiring Han Dynasty,and the creation skills,such as the cutting skills and styles,it takes the seal cutting style in Han and Qin Dynasty as the major one.At the same time,there are some criticisms about the problems existing in the aesthetic orientation and seal cutting,which reflects the lack of understanding of the development of it.The prefaces and postscripts of seal books,as supplementary elements,have important literature values in the history of seal cutting and seal books,which provide historic materials for evaluation,making friends and other relative problems.The literature value of study on the prefaces and postscripts takes an important role in researching the seal cutting and seal books in this period.
