In the late 19th century,a batch of western missionaries came to China for business, for travel,or for missionary activities.Thomas Thornville Cooper(1839-1878),the author of Travels of a Pioneer of Commerce in Pigtail and Petticoats(1871),recorded his experience during this time. This book belongs to travel notes with clear language. It consisted of fifteen chapters, and the translator was responsible for the last nine stories of Chapter Fifteen and Appendix. In the translation practice, the translator was guided by Jin Di's equivalent effect theory, which seems more concerned with three important concepts:receptor, effect and equivalence. And the substance of effect mainly refers to core spirit, concrete facts and atmosphere.Whether those three important elements are grasped by the translator can actually reflect whether the goal of equivalent effect is achieved. The theory provided practical guidance for this translation practice. This book is mainly for the related researchers on Chinese modern history.According to the equivalent effect theory, the translation process will not be finished until the translation text is received by readers. So in the process of translation, the translator payed much attention to translation effect, striving for the accurate translation. On the basis of source text, this report mainly discussed the two elements, concrete facts and atmosphere. In order to reflect the concrete facts of names of people and places, with the help of Wade-Giles method that was well accepted by the public, the translator consulted the relevant materials and finally confirmed the popular translation of some words. To strengthen the atmosphere of source text,in the translation of attributive clause, the translator mainly used techniques of combining and dividing translation to make the structure and logical relationship clear to understand, which can better present the atmosphere of the source text so as to increase the readability of the target text.
