A Report On Translation Of Oil-gas Exploration Papers Of The SEG International Exposition And 84^th Annual Meeting

With the demands for oil-gas increasingly growing,the traditional oil-gas exploration techniques can‘t satisfy the present exploitation plans.Thus new advanced oil-gas exploration techniques are supposed to be put forward and exchanged in the world.The SEG Annual Meeting and International Exposition,the world‘s largest gathering of exploration geophysics-related activities,provides a communication platform for the exploration experts to exchange new exploration techniques.Now that all the papers of the SEG are written in English,the English-Chinese translation of the SEG papers is an effective medium for some Chinese exploration experts to grasp the most advanced techniques.The author participated in the translation task of the SEG papers.During the translation process,the author found some difficulties when translating these high-tech conference papers: abundant specialized vocabulary,long-structured sentences and complicated contents,etc.To solve these problems,the author adopted Reiss‘s translation theory to finish this English-Chinese translation task of oil-gas exploration papers.In Reiss‘s text typology theory,she puts forward that the translation strategy is decided by the text type.She classifies texts into three types: the content-focused text,the form-focused text and the appeal-focused text.And each of them has its own dominating function.In translating,the translator should employ different translation criteria and strategies for different text types according to their distinctive functions.In the light of Ress‘s text typology,the author analyzed the text type of the oil-gas exploration papers and the corresponding translation strategy,and finally drew a conclusion that the papers of oil-gas exploration are content-focused texts and belong to EST.The main function of these papers is to deliver information.Therefore,in order to deliver the information of the original text accurately,literal translation is the most appropriate translation method.Meanwhile,due to the differences between English text and Chinese text at lexical and syntactical level,the author should adopt other translation methods flexibly,such as conversion and division.The author makes efforts to show the characteristics of the oil-gas exploration papers through a large number of instances,presenting various kinds of effective solutions to finish such a translation project.The author hopes to set a proper reference for the E-C translation in the field of Oil-gas exploration.
