This report is a summary of the author's one-year experience in high sour natural gas project. As an on-site interpreter, the author provided interpreting service for engineers from engineering department, mechanical department,HES department and etc.The body of the report is divided into five parts, which are respectively project introduction, interpreting preparation, interpreting process, difficulties and corresponding countermeasures, and assessment. In project introduction, the author elaborates how she gets involved in the project, the organizational structure of this project, and the tasks that interpreters undertake. In interpreting preparation, the author prepares terminology, oil and gas expertise, specific training and mentally prepared by the way of attending the company's training, consulting friends majored in relevant disciplines and searching on the internet and etc.Interpreting process is the highlight of this thesis. The author enumerates three typical cases of interpreting for engineers from engineering, mechanical and HES departments and summarizes the features of engineers' work from different disciplines: design engineers from engineering department make process system design and drawings, for whom the systematic logic is the key for system operation;mechanical engineers work in the field, whose work is concrete with miscellaneous tools to be used;HES engineers' work is detail-oriented,and they follow the procedures strictly. So the author applies three skills of note-taking,shortterm memory and non-verbal communication in interpreting for engineers from the three disciplines. In difficulties and corresponding countermeasures, the author combines the entire experience of interpreting practice to summarize four difficulties in engineering interpreting projects, which are harsh environment, different accents, cultural conflict and lack of professional background.Targeted at different difficulties, the author gets prepared both physically and psychologically to conquer the difficulty of environment;she takes the measure of inquiring the speaker for the clarification of accents and getting used to the accents to solve the accent difficulty;she adheres to the principle of respect and understanding and acting as a cultural coordinator to correspond with cultural conflicts;and she exchanges and communicates more with both national and foreign engineers to learn professional background knowledge. In assessment, the author evaluates the interpreting practice from clients' assessment and self-assessment.The company's client feedback system is connected with interpreters' bonus. It shows objectively that the clients' assessment of the author is positive as the author gets the bonus from the company. The author's self-assessment is that the interpreting practice is excellent with valuable achievements, but still there is room for improvement. At last, the author refines the whole thesis in conclusion and discusses the remaining problem of interpreter's role.Facing with cultural conflicts, the interpreter shall act as cultural coordinator on the premise of fidelity. On the one hand,it is imperative for a professional interpreter to be faithful to source texts;on the other hand,it is a way to protect the interpreter's interests in complicated engineering projects.
