A Report On The Interpreting Task Of CDB Well Pad

This paper is a report on the interpreting task of CDB gas project well pad by applying RDA model.RDA model,an integrated interpreting model based on the research of descriptive and explanatory models,is composed of relevance,deverbalization and adaptation.Relevance involves inferential actions which are closely related to contexts;deverbalization aids interpreters in comprehending the meanings by themselves instead of just finishing word-by-word translation;adaptation is a process of choosing expressions which make all the elements compatible to each other.The Chuandongbei(CDB)gas project is one of the largest onshore gas projects jointly run in China by Chevron—an international oil company and CNPC—a state-owned oil company of China.CDB well pads perform the essential role of the entire project—gas from the wells goes to the gas gathering station where it is dehydrated,filtrated,and finally transported to the gas plant via a 20" pipeline.The paper includes five parts—description of the interpreting task,preparation work,challenges and interpreting strategies,summary of the interpreting task and conclusion.Firstly,the background,target and requirements of the task are described,which shows that it is essential for the interpreter to establish smooth communication between Chinese and foreign workers and fulfill the task of the entire project.Then,the report gives an introduction to the process of preparation with technical terms,relevant information and theoretical support.Besides,different challenges and corresponding strategies are illustrated with a number of examples;in this section,RDA model is employed to provide strategies for the challenges encountered throughout the course of this task.Relevance is adopted in order to deal with comprehension barriers;adaptation is used to display how to deal with cultural differences,which includes context effect adaptation,cultural adaptation and acceptance adaptation;deverbalization is utilized with several auxiliary methods,such as source language repetition,logic diagram,note-taking.After that,the report summarizes the interpreting task,including evaluations from the client and the interpreter herself,and thereby putting forward some suggestions for future studies.Finally,the report makes a conclusion in regards to this interpreting task.This report shows that the RDA model is of great benefit to engineering interpreting with solutions to various challenges.However,due to the limitations of time and energy,the interpreter needs further studies and researches in terms of terminology and technical expertise.
