Landscape painting is popular among people as a separate category. In recent years, different themes and forms of landscape paintings have appeared in the Western painting circle. At the same time,a large number of landscape sketching activities have been held around China.More and more artists have turned their attention to landscape painting. It can be found that the landscape works created in different times, geographical and cultural backgrounds are very different. The landscape works reveal people's attitudes towards nature and land, and their self-positioning in the vast universe.Today's landscape painting does not only depict the beautiful natural scenery and the relationship between people and the living environment, but also reveals the artists' reflection on their own,the culture and the times. This paper attempts to briefly sort out changes in the theme and language of the Western landscape paintings. It mainly centers on works of two representative contemporary Western landscape painters,David Hockney and Peter Doig,to analyze and explore their landscape themes and formation at different stages,as well as the changes in languages used for different themes. After comparing to today's Chinese landscape oil painting sketching and creations, this paper tries to explore the new direction for contemporary Chinese landscape oil painting.
