A Case Study On C-E Interpretation For The Speech At The Opening Ceremony Of Boao Forum For Asia From Perspectives Of Explicitness And Implicitness

Diplomatic speech interpretation, from its literal meaning, refers to interpretation which is related to diplomatic affairs. In fact, diplomatic speeches are mostly delivered by leaders of states or diplomats in diplomatic situation,like international conference such as General Assembly of United Nations or regional forum as Boao forum for Asia.Diplomatic speech interpretation, unlike interpretation of other materials, what it pursues is not simply values of appreciation but clear logic, acceptable inference. As one of a crucial part of the forum, interpretation or translation of the speech at the opening ceremony in Boao forum for Asia offer good chances for the world to learn more about China. Considering this, China should make the most of this platform. Therefore, it is of great importance for China to improve interpretation or translation of the speech so as to help more foreigners have a good knowledge of China.In the process of translating or interpreting diplomatic speeches,explicitness and implicitness are frequently utilized to facilitate target receptors to master contents more distinctly. explicitness and implicitness have been hot topics in translation studies.However, studies on explicitness and implicitness of interpretation are rare. The thesis aims at studying on explicitness and implicitness in diplomatic speech interpretation and chooses the speech at the opening ceremony of Boao forum for Asia to do simulated interpretation and make a case study. Comparison analysis will also be launched between the reference interpretation and the author's interpretation in terms of explicitness and implicitness. First of all,the thesis makes a brief introduction for studies on definitions and classification for explicitness and implicitness. Then the author collects and analyzes data of the use of explicitness and implicitness in subject personal pronouns, conjunction and cultural elements and summarizes relevant techniques of explicitness and implicitness. According to the study, conclusions are made as follow: 1. By studying on C-E interpretations for subject personal pronouns, it could testify existence of explicitness and implicitness. Addition is a strategy of explicitness frequently utilized for interpreting personal subject pronouns. 2. explicitness and implicitness exists in interpreting conjunction. When interpreting conjunction, interpreters tend to use addition and omission. The frequency of the use of addition is higher than that of omission. 3. As for interpreting cultural elements, techniques of explicitness and implicitness like addition, paraphrase, omission are applied to interpretations. Among these strategies,paraphrase is the technique which is frequently applied by interpreters. 4. For the whole C-E interpretation, the frequency of explicitness is higher than that of implicitness. 5.explicitness and implicitness are impacted by many factors,such as language factors,cultural factors, textual factors and receptor factors.
