The Application Of Relevance Theory In Interpretation At Opening Speech Of Annual Meeting Of Boao Forum For Asia

From the perspective of cognitive,Relevance Theory,which was first proposed by Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson,offers a new approach for the research of interpretation.Relevance Theory points out that verbal communication is an ostensive-inferential cognitive process involving informative intention and communicative intention.In order to obtain the success of communication,the principle of optimal relevance must be followed.However,there are not adequate study on the application of Relevance Theory in interpretation,accordingly,it is necessary to further study the interpretation guided by Relevance Theory.This thesis is a translation study.Based on Relevance Theory and the characteristics of interpreting practice,firstly,this thesis analyzes the comprehension and contextual effect in interpretation from the perspective of Relevance Theory.Secondly,taking the on-site interpretation of the opening speech in the annual meeting 2015 of Boao Forum for Asia as an example,this thesis discusses the contextual application of Relevance Theory in interpretation at opening speech of annual meeting of Boao Forum for Asia.Thirdly,on the part of the guidance of Relevance Theory in the selection of interpretation strategies in specific examples,the paper discusses from the aspects of words and phrases,sentence structure and culture-loaded words.Several coping strategies are introduced,such as amplification,deletion,word-for-word translation and liberal translation.This thesis aims to show that it is effective and feasible to apply main principles of Relevance Theory to live interpretation at opening speech of annual meeting of Boao Forum for Asia.In fact,the research of this thesis is also a proof of this point.The research shows that the interpretation at opening speech of annual meeting of Boao Forum for Asia has its own specific contextual effect,and the selection of live interpreting strategies can be guided by Relevance Theory.The author hopes that the research results can benefit future interpreters at opening speech of annual meeting of Boao Forum for Asia from two aspects:early establishment of cognitive context and instant selection of interpreting strategies.At the same time,it is hoped that,concerns contained in the thesis and the analytic suggestions proposed can be of some reference to the relevant personnel engaged in meeting interpreting,and the author also hope this thesis can offer some help in the research of translation theories of interpreting.
