The capacity of writing in text is an important part to the foreign students who have reached the advanced level.However,in practical teaching,excessive repetition,which means using one word in different sentences twice,three times or even more,is a pretty common phenomenon.And it really affects the discourse coherence and expression effect.The research is based on Halliday and Hason's cohesive theory and previous researches on Chinese discourse cohesive.Focusing on the excessive repetition phenomenon,we select 1194 exam essays from the “HSK dynamic composition corpus” and search the errors in them,then analyze the errors from the types,causes and the characteristics.After these parts,we give some suggestions on discourse teaching and cohesion learning.This thesis is composed of six parts:First,states the background,aim,reseach object and scope,and the specific methods.Second,introduces the cohesion theory and defines the key concepts in the paper like “text”,“cohesion”,“repetition” and “excessive repetition”.Chapter 3 to 5 are the main body.Firstly we classify the excessive repetition errors from from the semantic level and explained their influence on text.Secondly,from the perspective of students,we summarize the causes and characteristics of those errors.And in the end,aiming at the shortcomings in the course of teaching,and combining previous research results and my teaching experience,we put forward the advices and actual practices on the discourse teaching and text cohesion.
