The project report is based on the author's personal translation practice of news commentaries selected from "The Talk of the Town" column in New Yorker. Ranging from July to October, 2016, the ten commentaries cover a wide variety of events, including the American presidential election, racial divide, war on drugs, and conflicts in Syria. News commentary, functioning as one of the important means to disseminate news, provides not only real-time news information, but also the writer's positions and opinions. It enables readers to learn about the latest events as well as to peek into the nature and meaning behind them.Based on the translation of news commentaries and by combining specific examples, the author explores and analyzes difficulties and issues confronted in the translation process at the level of lexicon, syntax, and rhetoric. During this process, the author deeply realizes that the translation of news commentary should, on the one hand, convey the facts in the source text accurately, and on the other hand, deliver the writers' thoughts and ideas in the target text to guide public opinions. And under the guidance of Skopos theory proposed by Hans Vermeer, the author puts forward some translation strategies, such as conversion of part of speech, turning phrases into clauses, literal and free translation, etc., aiming to provide certain references for future translation of news commentary.
