A Report On Translation Of News Commentaries In TIME

With the overwhelming globalization,the international news is bringing about significant influence on countries and their people.Traveling more than 100 years since its foundation in1923,TIME enjoys a high reputation of its inspiring commentaries,aiming to deliver news facts and commentators' opinions.Skopos theory points out that the purpose of translation determines the whole translation behavior.Therefore,Skopos theory has important guiding significance for the translation of news commentary texts.The translation practice of news commentary texts under the Skopos theory expands the theoretical depth of news translation research and strengthens cross-cultural communication.Based on the feature analysis of the source texts,this study applies the Skopos theory to the translation practice of news commentary texts.Appropriate translation solutions are worked out to the problems on lexical level,syntactic level and discourse level,which are summarized and analyzed in the translation report aiming to provide reference for further studies on translation of similar texts.The author holds that translation of news commentary texts shall follow principles of accuracy,consistency and compensation under the Skopos theory.Specifically,on lexical level,omission,simplification and annotation are suggested to translate news term,cultural-loaded words and imagery words.On syntactic level,reversing,splitting and addition are adopted to translate expanded sentence,passive voice and direct speech.On discourse level,as for the contents concerning the commentators' viewpoint or attitude,semantic accuracy and readability of the translated version are of prime importance.This thesis consists of six chapters.The first chapter is the introduction to the research background,objectives and significance as well as the report structure.The second chapter is the literature review.The third chapter presents the process of the translation practice including preparation of translation,in-translation and post-translation quality control.The fourth chapter puts emphasis on the features of news commentary texts and the theoretical foundation.The fifth chapter is the case study to analyze the difficulties and the corresponding solutions under the guidance of Skopos theory.The sixth chapter is the conclusion including the major findings and the limitations of the translation.
