Kenya is one of the East African countries. Being colonized by the British, its official language is English though more people also speak a local language Kiswahili which is spoken by more than a third of the population. There are also foreign languages spoken by a fraction of the population and this is because of the foreigners coming to Kenya for purposes of commerce, tours and travel etc. The learners of Chinese language are needed to have a good command of the Chinese language which is very important for Chinese learners.Chinese language in Kenya is getting more popular than any other United Nations languages. The Kenyan government has plans to start Chinese teaching programs right from the kindergarten to the university. Presently Chinese language is comprehensively taught in the Confucius institutes at undergraduate level which has made progress in the development of Chinese language. My research will therefore focus on the undergraduate students taught in Confucius Institutes in Kenya. Currently there are three major Confucius institutes in Kenya and these are; Confucius Institute of the University of Nairobi, Confucius Institute of Kenyatta University and Confucius institute of Egerton University.Being a new language it is mostly studied for getting scholarships to China. The ones left behind in most cases have a lower communication ability in Chinese which is attributed to the teaching methods and the students' activities in developing of the spoken Chinese abilities.Intermediate Chinese learners in Kenya get it hard to communicate fluently in Chinese and therefore there is need for developing suitable teaching methods, teaching materials as well as creating an environment for the development of levels of speaking for the Intermediate Chinese learners. In the History of language development it is said that human beings developed speaking and listening skills before writing and reading and therefore listening and speaking is far much student centered and so need a way of cultivating it to the students. My thesis will therefore be taking a much deeper research on the tactics used for teaching intermediate Chinese speaking class in Kenya and also come up with some suggestions to enable a better result for the learners. My research will also look at the major tactics that would be able to improve Intermediate Chinese speaking students in Kenya. Having done my teaching practice in Kenya and studied in China my knowledge on Chinese acquisition is more and the recommendations might be of assistance to Intermediate Chinese speaking learners in Kenya.
