| This is a translation report on Travels of a Pioneer of Commerce in Pigtail and Petticoats written by Thomas Thomville Cooper.It tells the journey of Mr.Cooper who travels from Tibet of China into India.This book has been divided into eight parts and handed into eight people individually.The report is based on the third chapter of this book and the author is in charge of the translation of this chapter which is about Mr.Cooper’s journey from Ichang to Chung-Ching.This report consists of five parts:the first chapter is the task description,and the author will give a brief introduction of the task;the second chapter is the description of the translation process,and the author will introduce some details about the process such as the preparations and the translation tools;the third chapter is the introduction of the theory,and the author will introduce the definition as well as the translation strategies of the Reception Theory;the fourth chapter is case analysis in which the author will specifically describe what is the translation process and introduce some of translation strategies that are commonly used in this translation task,for example,omission,amplification,transformation,conversion and the method of dealing with complex sentences.Written in late Qing Dynasty,the source text(ST)belongs to travel notes and the names of some Chinese places in it were used by the Wade-Giles system which was different from our modern pinyin.In the case analysis,the author will give some information about the Wade-Giles system,and then put forward some examples that appear in the translation process.Finally,the author will discuss about the task experience and limitations that has faced during the translation process.After the translation of this source text,the author has learned a lot.The author has known Reception Theory clearly,and generally understood how to use this theory in specific situation.And then,the author has used different translation strategies to solve different translation problems.This practice experience has encouraged the author to deal with different kinds of translation problems.It views a fact that the source text has not been translated before,it is hoped to be accepted by the readers.By reading this,they can gain more information about the social life and local customs in late Qing Dynasty.And the translation strategies for dealing with travel notes could better used by other translators. |
