An Interpreting Report On Car Talk | Car Technology In The Future:Hybrid Cars & Electric Cars Of NPR Program

The television program Car talk is selected as the target of the interpretation practice in this paper.It is a car talk show of National Public Station,hosted by brothers Tom and Ray Magliozzi.Combined with the narration and interview,this program discussed the autotechnology and explored the future development of car in humorous ways with professional analyses on auto-industry.From the fuel cell to the hybrid vehicle,from the plug-ins all-electric sports car,this edition took alternative-energy vehicle as topic,introduced the current situation and future directions of clean transportation energy to the audience,put forward problems and solutions in the transition of traditional fossil fuel,and aroused the audience's Introspection on the relations between the current energy structure and global climate changes.Translation has long been a form of cross-cultural communication in human history.With the development of history,Translation is also playing an increasingly significant role in the promotion of interactive dialog,mutual-exchange,mutual-understanding,and joint development among peoples all over the world.After we entered the 21 st century,globalization has been deepening,which enhanced the connection and exchange between our country and others.We are introducing foreign advanced science and technology,and absorbing excellent culture more than ever before.So translation,especially interpretation,will continuously make contribution in pushing these mutual-exchange and Mutualunderstanding forward.The Car talk of this issue introduced the advanced technologies of energy industry.So,some technological narrations with complicated patterns are not easy to be interpreted directly.Besides,the talk shows always include some oral expressions based on the cultural background in source language.This report adopted the interpretive theory and Nida's dynamic equivalence theory to guide the interpretation.In this report,the translator firstly made a brief introduction on the two theories,and combined the Nida's “functional equivalence” and the “deverbalization” of the interpretive theory to adapt to different circumstances in translation.Taking “fitness” and “rightness” as the main principle,the report also expressed the information of source text.Besides,some adjustments were made in order to deliver the attitudes and feelings of the source text from the view of “functional equivalence”,and the interpretation can follow the linguistic and cultural customs of Chinese.The preface introduced the popular automobile culture in the United States,as the “country that on the wheels”,the United States holds the leading position in both cultural level and technical level.The description of interpreting task elaborated the meaning of the interpreting program,as the greatest developing country,the car population in China sharply increases in recent years,while the local automobile cultures are relatively backward.Aiming at the selected materials,the report innovatively designed a questionnaire survey to show the meaning of this interpretation.The result indicated that there are many problems to be resolved in the interpretation of foreign automobile cultures and related programs.In the process of interpretation,the report introduced the theoretical basement,and combined the interpretive theory and Nida's dynamic equivalence theory to guide the interpretation.Besides,this report made full pre-preparation from the view of cultural background,related terms,and the audience.The report also associated the theoretical background with the interpreting strategies to analyze some classical cases.In the last part,the summary for the report pointedly analyzed some problems encountered and their solutions,and accumulated some useful experiences for future work.
