Art,as a reflection of society,is usually influenced by its culture and contributes to change the culture in turn.The author holds that a good knowledge of Western art could help Chinese readers to better understand its culture,which is obviously beneficial for cultural communication and exchange under the trend of globalization.As a major constituent of art,visual art includes drawing,painting,ceramics and sculpting.The book Nudes mainly introduces more than 70 artists,128 paintings and some sculptures.In this paper,the author firstly gives a brief introduction to the original text Nudes,as well as the translation project.Then the author also discusses the application of Newmark's semantic translation and communicative translation in the translation of Nudes.Based on the two translation methods,the author puts forward two focuses when dealing with such texts,that is,accuracy and readability.What's more,the author concludes three main challenges during the translation process,namely,how to translate artistic terms,ambiguous words and phrases,as well as long and complicated sentences.The author lists some solutions to these questions,including,amplification and addition for artistic terms;addition and omission for ambiguous words and phrases;restructuring and conversion for long and complicated sentences,and hopes to provide some reference and help for those who want to translate such art texts.
