Abstract/Summary:
Films offer the audiences a chance to experience and appreciate different lives, and play a significant role in cultural communication. Chinese Kungfu films canalways gain the favor of foreign audience. As a Kungfu film, The Grandmasters, hasperformed extremely well at the box office in America since its release. In the film, different schools, moves and metaphors are all difficult to translate. And the quality ofsubtitle will influence the spreading of Chinese wushu culture. Linda Jaivin translatesthe subtitle tactfully in order to let the audience enjoy the film as well as appreciate thedeep wushu culture and philosophy of grandmasters. This thesis will analyze thesubtitle translation of the film, The Grandmasters, by employing Peter Newmark’ssemantic and communicative translation theory. Semantic translation can be adopted totranslate wushu terms in order to keep the original culture. Transliteration, literaltranslation, free translation and lexical borrowing can be used to express theconnotation of wushu culture. Communicative translation can be adopted to translatemetaphors in order to achieve the same communication effect as the SL’s audience.Simplification, substitution and generalization can be used to deliver a smooth andauthentic TL.
