A Translation Report On Master Of Disaster(Chapter 21)under The Guidance Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Based on Frank Krake's memoir Master of Disaster,the author chooses Chapter 21 "Main Sponsor" to conduct translation practice in this report.In order to fully reappear the style and features of the original text,the author uses functional equivalence theory which proposed by Eugene A.Nida as the guidance during the process of translation.This book records the leading character,Frank,who starts his business and experienced the cultural exchange for decades under the background of economic globalization in the new millennium.According to the characteristics of the source text,the author finds that some words and sentences are worth analyzing while translating.In lexical level,there are many terminologies,polysemy and cultural-loaded words.Under different contexts and circumstances,the author adopted different methods,such as literal translation,free translation and addition.In view of the cultural differences between source-text readers and target-text readers,if using the method of literal translation can not reach equivalence between the source text and the target text,the author uses free translation,annotation,and addition to achieve functional equivalence.In syntactic level,there are many short sentences,metaphorical sentences and descriptive sentences.For continuous short sentences,the author mainly uses addition and combination.For metaphorical sentences,literal translation is the most used in order to keep the style of the source text and convey the intention of the writer.If literal translation may cause misunderstandings,free translation and addition are adopted while translating.For descriptive sentences,combining the context and revealing the style of original text are needed,making the translation fluent,natural and equivalent.By analyzing some selected examples from the translation practice,the author draw a preliminary conclusion that translation strategies above can be applied while translating this text under the guidance of functional equivalence.
