Proactive personality has been found to positively predict performance,job satisfaction,and career success.In this study,however,we touch upon the dark side of proactive personality on certain conditions.Based on self-verification theory(Swann,1983),we propose that when proactive employees under big pressure at work,they will develop a defensive mechanism in response to unsuccessful self-verification.This defensive mechanism is considered to be hubristic pride.We focus on the negative impact on the work performance and the specific psychological mechanism.Study 1 was conducted by questionnaires from 289 employees in Hangzhou,Ningbo,Shanghai and other places.The reliability and validity of the scale were ensured by the project analysis,reliability analysis and factor analysis of 289 valid questionnaires.On the basis of this,from the perspective of self-verification theory,we did the correlation analysis,regression analysis,moderation test,and the moderated mediation test,we found the influence of work performance due to the proactive personality and its psychological mechanism.In study 2,we chose 8 typical samples on the basis of study 1 to understand the relationship of proactive personality,hubristic pride,work pressure,and the influence factors of uncivilized behavior and work performance.The main results are summarized as follows:(1)Proactive personality has negative effects on uncivilized behavior,and has positive effects on work performance;(2)Hubristic pride is positively related to the uncivilized behavior,and negatively related to work performance;(3)The interaction exists between proactive personality and interpersonal stress,and can predict hubristic pride;(4)As a source of stress,interpersonal stress has an interaction with proactive personality,and can predict hubristic pride,then negatively related to work performance.
