A Study On Translation Of Feature Report From The Perspective Of The Functional Theory

As a sub-variety of news report format,feature report covers events or newsmakers with literary techniques and serves as the main channel of disseminating information to the general readers in a timely and accurately way.Compared with traditional hard news,feature report is not only a way of notification,but also a kind,of aesthetic feeling,which is full of readability and human touch.In recent years,feature report is developing rapidly in the journalism field by playing an important role in winning the readers and the markets.Past research shed little light on the translation of feature report,which is a relatively new format but is of great value.Accordingly the focus of this thesis will be directed towards the translation of the literary distinctions with consideration of TL readers' aesthetic view.The thesis is based on a feature report on black families in the age of mass incarceration in the USA.The story,written by TA-NEHISI COATES,was published in The Atlantic Monthly.From the perspective of the functional translation theory,this thesis analyzes and summarizes the translation process of feature report and explores some translation techniques in the research of the translation of feature report.Specifically the thesis analyzes the translation of feature report from two perspectives.In light of the literary quality,this thesis explores the ways of conveying the literary distinctions of feature report in the process of translation through three aspects——"speech and dialogue","multidimensional semantic components" and "contextual restoration".In terms of reader-orientation,this thesis maiuly elaborates the question from three aspects,including "clues complement","cultural differences,and "post-processing translation”.Efforts are made with a view to achieving functional equivalence and dynamic equivalence of the target language by meeting the needs of the target language reader groups,adapting to readers' habits,thereby helping the targeted readers to gain an accurate understanding of the main points of the feature report.
