Research Of Teaching Chinese Adverb "Jiu" As A Foreign Language Based On The Theory Of Lexical Chunks

"Jiu" is a frequently used word in the Chinese language with multiple parts of speech and various senses thus presenting great difficulties in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.Contrastive,situational and error-analysis methods are preferably employed in the past classroom teaching but with little effect.Based on chunk theory,such structures as "adverb 'Jiu' + like adverb" can be dealt with as a chunk.Through the quantitative and semantic analysis of such set phrases,namely "adverb 'Jiu'+time adverb"',"adverb 'Jiu'+ scope adverb",and "adverb'Jiu'+ modal adverb" taken from the New Practical Chinese Reader Textbook,this paper proposes some specific methods in teaching and textbook-editing,in the hopes of producing much greater effect in the teaching of the adverb“Jiu”.Fourteen such "adverb 'Jiu' + like adverb" structures are analyzed,including eight "adverb 'Jiu'+time adverb" co-occurrents,namely "zaojiu","ma shangjiu","jiu yi jing","yi xia zi jiu","jiu xian","jiu yi zhi","li ke jiu","jiu hu ran";three "adverb 'Jiu'+ scope adverb" co-occurrents,namely "jin jin jiu","zong gong jiu","dan jiu";and three "adverb'?'+ modal adverb" co-occurrents,namely "jiu bi xu","ye xu jiu","ben lai jiu".This paper falls into three parts:In the first part,learners and teaching methods are introduced after the presentation of the reasons of selected topics,research purpose and related study of chunk theory.The teaching methods of adverb“Jiu" is the main concern in this paper in which co-occurrent "adverb 'Jiu'+ like adverb"as a chunk is suggested in classroom teaching.In the second part,an exhaustive statistics is conducted of all the co-occurrent "adverb 'Jiu'+ like adverb" chunks in three categories,namely "adverb 'Jiu'+ time adverb","adverb 'Jiu'+ scope adverb",and "adverb'Jiu'+ modal adverb" taken from the New Practical Chinese Reader Textbook.The third part is about the corpus analysis,in which adverb chunk centering about "Jiu"is suggested in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
