| Popular science writings play an indispensable role in spreading science,broadening public horizon and cultivating people’s scientific outlook on the world.However,the lack of original domestic popular science works has impeded the further advancement of the cause of China’s popular science.Therefore,the introduction of excellent foreign popular science readings is of great significance,which promotes the translation of such texts.This report is based on the translator’s English-Chinese translation practice of Life’s Origins excerpted from The Living Cosmos,which is the first popular science book of Chris Impey,a professor at the University of Arizona.The excerpt covers more than one professional field such as astronomy,geology,biology and chemistry;besides,it features concise and refined language as well as perfect combination of long and short sentences accompanied by rhetorical devices.All of these fully demonstrate the four characteristics of popular science texts: scientificity,literariness,popularity and interestingness.In the writing process of this report,the translator firstly makes a detailed introduction to the translation project and popular science texts.Then the whole translation process is sequentially described.Next,based on the manifestation of English and Chinese differences in the source text,the translator focuses on conversion in the part of case analysis,mainly discussing the application of conversion strategy to words and sentence structure.The use of such strategy has not only contributed to an idiomatic target text but also effectively realized the features of popular science texts.Therefore,it is expected that this report is able to serve as a reference for the translation of such texts. |
