A Project Report On Subtitle Translation Of Documentary Human Planet (Season 1)

This translation project report analyzes the subtitle text of a BBC documentary Human Planet.Films and Television programs,as media carriers,enrich the cultural intercourse among countries in light of the more intimate affiliation between China and other countries.At present, Chinese audience watch overseas films and TV programs on the Internet. Most subtitles are translated by subtitle groups established by amateurs and thus are not so satisfactory. In addition, domestic studies on subtitle translation start much later than those in foreign countries,hence this part deserves more practice and further research.There are three reasons for choosing the subtitles of the documentary Humanan Planet as the original text: 1. its cultural diversity brings translation difficulty; 3. the difficulties encountered during the process of translation require further analysis, and the strategies used in translation practice demand to be summarized under the guidance of three-dimensional transformation of Professor Hu Gengshen's Eco-translatology.Three main difficulties encountered during the translation process are as the following:1. linguistic form; 2. the embodiment of cultural discrepancy; 3. the transmission of speakers'real intentions and attitudes. This report adopts splitting, translation inversion and free translation to solve problems encountered in the selection process of linguistic form, while choosing translation strategies of three-dimensional transformation to render culture-loaded words. Adding annotations and transliteration are appropriately used to represent rarely known names of countries, nationalities and people. Chinese modal particles are employed to embody speakers' real intentions and attitudes. In addition, during the translation practice,more prominent translation problems are urgent to be solved. To fight for the high quality versions, joint efforts are needed in constant practice and discussion.
