The Project Report On The Translation Of News Commentary For WeChat Subscription Account JTW

The project report is based on the translation of news commentaries released by WeChat subscription account JTW which the author has worked for for two years. The news commentaries are mainly extracted from foreign press media, such as The Economist,The Guardian, The New Yorker and so on, covering different fields from economy to psychology.The author selected some of the translated articles to analyze the features and functions of news commentary and summarized the experience in translating such kind of articles with the guidance of relevance theory which was raised by Sperber and Wilson in 1986. According to relevance theory, to correctly understand natural language, we have to seek relevance through context and inference. In translation, correct understanding and cognition of natural language is the premise of achieving pragmatic equivalence.In the process of translating news commentaries,the obstacles and problems are mainly about the translation of headlines, vocabulary and some long sentences. These problems are brought about by different ways of thinking and expression between English and Chinese people, the lack of knowledge of different fields of the author, the inference of reporters' communicative intentions and the features of news commentary itself.Different solutions are proposed in the translation project report to solve the obstacles and problems mentioned above. When translating headlines,the author should apply specific translation strategy according to the content and writing style of the news commentary; literal translation with annotations is oftenly-used when the author solve lexical difficulties; clarifying the relationship between grammatic logic and semantic logic of long sentences is the key to solving syntactic difficulties. In the end, the author summarizes the project including some suggestions and points to be improved.
