A Report On E-C News Commentary Translation

With the rapid development of the Internet,news commentary has not only been an important channel for global readers to have at their fingertips the trends of events around the world,but also has provided readers with profound and original insights of the commentators.Translation plays a key role in conveying information to readers from other countries,and the differences in language and culture between countries make news commentary translation a demanding task.Based on E-C translation of six news commentaries from Chicago Tribune about the newly-elected mayor of Chicago— Lori Lightfoot,the report explores the strategies and techniques of news commentary translation from the aspects of words,sentences,texts,figures of speech and titles by applying Nida's “Functional Equivalence”.Firstly,the translator should have a deep understanding of the features of both the original and translated texts,taking the reaction of the readers into consideration.Secondly,the translator should fully comprehend the original,entailing searching for the background information,correctly understanding some special words in the light of the text,and figuring out the relations among the syntactic elements.Thirdly,the translator should choose appropriate translation strategies and techniques with the possible reaction of the translated text readers in mind,so as to retain the flavor of the original work.The report aims to provide new thinking in translation in relevant fields for translators to choose apt strategies and techniques in specific situations,so as to improve the quality of news commentary translation.
