Translation Report On Leaders From The Economist

Leader,as one of the basic genres of news,is highly valued by the news media.Therefore,it is often regarded as the heart of newspapers.Such a genre of news has its unique linguistic features.As an international news magazine,the Economist has attracted over 1 million readers weekly around the world with its distinct opinions,deep analysis and global viewpoints.In2012,the Economist opened a totally new column for China,providing an effective channel for us to know China on the global stage.The author chooses 6 articles from the Economist from the year 2015 to 2016 as the translation tasks,all together about 10,000 words.By analyzing the linguistic features of leaders from the Economist in terms of the title,the lead,the sentence pattern and the tense,this translation report aims to provide a reference to leader translation.This report consists of 5 chapters.Chapter One is a brief introduction to this translation report including the task background and its significance.Chapter Two presents the three stages in accomplishing the task: preparation,translation and proofreading.Chapter Three analyzes the linguistic features of leaders of the Economist at the levels of title,lead,tense,sentence patterns,acronyms and jargons,providing a foundation for the case study and translation skills in the next chapter.Chapter Four is the case study,which is the main body of this translation report.As for the translations of titles,the author puts forward literal translation,free translation,addition and the application of Chinese idioms.As for the translation of polysemic words,the translator should take the context of words into consideration and try to avoid taking the words too literally.As for the translation of simple expanded sentences,the author adopts the translation methods such as synchronizing,reversing and splitting.Chapter Five is the ending of this report,pointing out the findings and limitations of this translation report.
