A Report On Translation Of The Web Of Time

There are different characters,attractive plots,vivid descriptions and special customs in a novel,especially a novel with another language.From it we can acquire interesting and pragmatic language knowledge,therefore it is a potential one for translators to study.This thesis is based on the translation practice of an English novel,the source text is The Web of Time(Robert E.Knowles,1908,Chapter 1 to 4),which mainly focuses on the conflict between a couple.This thesis includes four parts.The first part is Task Description,which is an introduction to the source,background and significance of the task;the second part is Task Process,which deals with the preparations made for translation,ways to analyze and translate,and the proofreading after translation.The third part is Case Study,which analyzes and discusses the problems,explains the translation finished under the guidance of functional equivalence theory;the fourth part is a summary of translation practice.It may be easy for a translator to read an English novel,but to express it in another language is rather difficult.There are many detailed descriptions,delicate emotions,complex mood(and so on)in a novel.There are many difficult questions we face when we translate,should we just seek the meaning equivalence? Or remain the original form of the source text? Will it make readers confused? Through Nida's “functional equivalence” theory,we come to know that we'd better retain the form,and grammar(that is “formal equivalence”)of the source text,but if the expression of emotion,connotation,and culture is limited by form,then what we should do is to abandon the form,and seek the functional equivalence.So,the author has finished this translation practice under the guidance of the “functional equivalence” theory,summarize the former application of this theory and present many examples to illustration.The author has learned that emphasis on the formal equivalence may bring many misunderstandings,which will consequently make readers confused.The key point lies in whether the translators fullyexpress the source text and transfer it to our readers.At least in novel translation,the author think,it is of great importance.Finally,the author hopes this report can be helpful to the future studies.
