| On many occasions,Mo Yan attributes his winning of the Nobel Prize in Literature to his only English translator Howard Goldblatt,a very well-known sinologist nowadays.Through his translation,quite a few Chinese writers have been awarded international literary prizes.With his vivid translation,he reproduces the styles of the original novels.However,it's also worth mentioning that Howard Goldblatt's translation is featured with his own style.This may be related to his cultural identity,which has been formed as a result of his early days in Taiwan,educational background,research field and so on.Honggaoliang Jiazu is Mo Yan's first novel to be translated by Howard Goldblatt.Published in 1987,it remains one of the representative works of Mo Yan.The novel is well known for its distinctive language,complicated characterization and flexible narrative patterns.Its English version Red Sorghum got published in America in 1993 and won good reputation.Although the translation of Red Sorghum has won lots of praise from both foreign and domestic scholars,including the author Mo Yan,Howard Goldblatt's translation has also been criticized a lot,especially his “rewriting and deleting while translating” approach.Basing on Red Sorghum,the author conducts a descriptive study to explore into Howard Goldblatt's cultural identity and its influence on his translation.Howard Goldblatt is a native American who is deeply influenced by American culture and ideology and also a sinologist who has been fond of Chinese literature and devoted to the research and translation of Chinese literature for decades.Meanwhile,he's a loyal translator who carefully follows the original texts to extend Chinese culture to the west,as well as a scholar who rewrites Chinese novels with his own translation thoughts.The research also shows that the selection and understanding of the source text and the translation methods in the target text have been influenced by Howard Goldblatt's cultural identity. |
