This is a report based on the translation of the third chapter of a newly-published economic book The Rise and Fall of Nations: Forces of Change in a Post-Crisis World. As a book of political economics,it talks about ten forces of change that influence the economic growth of nations in post-crisis world from a very fresh and unique perspective.By translating the book, the author has expanded her professional knowledge, and improved her translation competence as well. The use of English attributive clauses is one of the most distinctive features of this book, which has increased the difficulty in translation practice. Many scholars of translation studies have discussed the translation of English attributive clauses a lot,and most of the methods they provided are based on the surface grammatical structure of these clauses. That is to say, these methods,to a great extent, are subjective. However, there are a few scholars who expound the translation of attributive clauses from a linguistic perspective, which is more scientific. Therefore, the author applies the theory proposed by Zhang Meigang who discusses the translation of English attributive clauses from a cognitive-functional perspective to the translation practice so as to testify the applicability of his theory in translating attributive clauses in economic texts.Through this translation practice, the author finds that Zhang?s theory is very applicable to the translation of English attributive clauses. However, there still are exceptions in real practice. In addition, the theory proposed by Zhang Meigang also has its defects because some opinions are not so applicable in the translation of attributive clauses.
