A Report On The Attributive Clauses Translation Of The I Thought You Said This Would Work From The Perspective Of The Functional Equivalence Theory

This article is a translation practice report based on Chapter 1 to Chapter 4 of Ann Gavin’s novel I Think You Said This Would Work as the main object of analysis.This article tells the story of two best friends in the past who were estranged from each other due to a misunderstanding,but their mutual friend Katie,who is now hospitalized for cancer,needs a little help from her two best friends among college.On this trip together,they untied their hearts and reconciled.Among the narration,the author uses vivid and rich writing ways to depict the misunderstandings and contradictions between the close friends,and lays the groundwork for the final opening of the barrier and re-acceptance of each other,giving readers a sense of warmth.This report mainly discusses the translation of attributive clauses guided by Eugene Nida’s theory of functional equivalence.The attributive clause is more flexible.Among the narration and character dialogues,we use many attributive clauses which are precisely.Those complex sentences make English expressions full of mysteries and worth to study.At the last 20th century,the theory provided a new way of thinking for the translation of attributive and complex clauses.It shouldn’t seek rigid correspondence of the text,but to achieve functional equivalence between the two languages.The theory requires the translation maintain semantic reciprocity,cultural reciprocity,and stylistic reciprocity.Guided by Eugene Nida’s theory of functional reciprocity,this paper proposes some translation methods for attributive clauses on the basis of following three principles of reciprocity:literal translation,free translation,interpreting,extending and simultaneous translation.Through the study of the Chinese translation of attributive clauses and their translation strategies through this practice report,it is conducive to promoting the integration of translation theory and practice.
