This translation report has been written on the basis of the translation practice of A World on Fire: Britain's Crucial Role in the American Civil War(the Chapter 34 War is Cruelty). It is known as a historical book written by Amanda Foreman, which was listed as one one of the top books by the New York Times.By using simple and unpretentious language,Foreman restored the state and psychology of the people during the American Civil War.The translator chose the attributive clause to study and adopted the Chapter 34,the climax of A World on Fire:Britain's Crucial Role in the American Civil War,for translation practice. In this chapter,Foreman described many scenes of war,and the cruelty of them can be seen from the text. Therefore, the translator should try to recovery the emotion in the source text to realize certain equivalence between the two languages. In order to convey the essence of the original text and make the target language readers take on a new look, the translator chose functional equivalence theory as guidance.English attributive clauses include restrictive clauses and non-restrictive clauses. The translator mainly adopted three methods: pre-modifier,post-modifier and blending. Moreover, there are also adverbial attributive clauses, which are often used to explain the logical connotation among words and phrases, like cause, result, concession, purpose, condition, etc.Frequently, this kind of clause is often translated by conversion. Each language has its own characteristics and each text has its own uniqueness.Texts differ from each other in language style, theme and difficulty,so translation strategies should be adopted flexibly to deal with these problems. The translator hopes to exercise professional skills, lay a solid foundation to be a qualified translator in the future, and apply what has been learned.
