A Study On Syntactic Linearity In E-C Simultaneous Interpreting

As a complicated verbal communication activity, Simultaneous Interpreting requires the interpreter to convey the meaning in target language at almost the same speed of the speaker.In this process, syntactic linearity is the basic principle, and it is also regarded as the Golden Rule of simultaneous interpreting by interpreters and scholars. Coherence and accuracy should be guaranteed while the interpreter deals with the new information continuously given by the speaker. Given the differences between English and Chinese sentence structures, the interpreter must realize “synchronization” by taking techniques like segmentation, waiting,precipitation, adjustment, addition, deletion and repetition so as to interpret source language.Syntactic linearity is the most economic way on information storage and words sequence adjustment, thus became an effective strategy for interpreting considering the obvious differences between the two languages.Based on the differences between English and Chinese sentence structures, this report analyzes relative sentence types, and thus finds out the basic principles for the interpreting of those types of sentences. To give a better explanation of the principles, the speeches by Michelle Obama at Peking University and Chengdu Number Seven Middle School were adopted to do the simultaneous interpreting. The report focuses on the realization and application of syntactic linearity in E-C simultaneous interpreting. Difficulties and the solving methods are studied in this report so as to serve as guidance in the effective application of this principle in my future interpreting career.
