Functional Equivalence In Fiction Translation

With the increase of international exchange,more and more foreign literature works have been introduced to China during the last few decades.Fiction,as an important cultural carrier,have gained great popularity.Therefore,fiction translation has undoubtedly played a prominent role.Among many theories of translation that have emerged both in the Eastern and Western world,Eugene Nida's theory of functional equivalence is one of the most widely accepted.According to Nida(1975:33),translation consists in producing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent to the message of the source language.In light of functional equivalence,translators not only need to convey the information of the source text to readers,but also to represent the artistic conception and connotations of the source text in fiction translations.This paper is composed in the form of translation practice report,which is based on the fiction Love in the Time of Revolution.Through the translation of the first chapter of this book,the author finished this translation report on the basis of practical experience,and theoretically use Nida's functional equivalence with reference to lexicon and sentence during the translation process.In terms of lexical level,the author achieved accurate translation by contextual analysis.In terms of sentence level,as for the original sentences,especially the complex or long sentences in original text,the author translated them in accordance with the way of expression in Chinese and preserved the original meaning of the source text.
