This translation report from English into Chinese is based on the fifth part Korea and Dian Bien Phu 1950-1954 of the book Hubris: The Tragedy of War in the Twentieth Century written by British correspondent Alistair Horne.In this part,the author mainly describes two regional wars: the War of Korea and the Battle of Dian Bien Phu and makes specific analysis of them through the perspective of hubris of leaders to probe into what caused tragedies of the wars.The translator cooperated with another two translators in this translation project,initiated by Translation Society of Yunnan Universities,and adopted various strategies in order to ensure its quality for the purpose of publication.(1)Guidelines from Skopos theory proposed by Hans Vermeer played a main role in this translation.As a book to be published,coherence rule should be followed so as to offer the reader a friendly reading experience while,on the other hand,as a historical narrative,fidelity rule should also be manifested in translation so as to achieve as much historical truth and intention of the original author as possible.(2)Other related sources such as maps,historical documents were referred to,so as to ensure that the names of locations,foreign generals,etc.,are in good conformity with the current translation in China.Roughly,the report consists of four sections.In section one,the translator makes a brief introduction of the translation task from the background,significance and writing style of the source text.Section two discusses mainly the preparation,translation theories and revision the translator performed in translation.In section three,the translator makes specific case analysis of the typical problems he met in translation with Skopos theory.Finally,Section four makes a summary of this translation,indicating some points that the translated text needs improving and the lessons the translator has learned from this translation.
