Tuesdays with Morrie narrates a story that happened between a dying old professor and one of his students.Starting from the topic of death, the whole story is concerned with this topic. The theme of the book is quite ordinary but gives readers much food for thought. The source text is common, also can be classified as documentary writing that is based on the real people or events that occurred in daily life or history. The author hopes to attract his readers by fine language, unique narration, and abundant plots.During the process of translation,I was guided by Peter Newmark‘s communicative translation consciously or unconsciously. What the aim for him or her is the same effect that has been made to the target readers by translator as to the original language readers by the author. It‘s much understandable for Chinese readers.Meanwhile, communicative translation is like semantic translation, which has to be faithful to the source text. But the difference is that the former values more about the effects of translation to readers. This thesis mainly discusses the important and difficult points that I met with throughout the translation under the guidance of the theory of communicative translation.I analyze the questions from three main aspects, namely, the level of words, the level of sentences, and the level of dialogues.I hope that the research will help future translators in the translation of documentary writings.
