Documentary literature refers to the literature with documentary and literary features. It is based on what happened in history or real events in life, presenting to the public in a literary way.In recent years, many foreign documentary works have become well-received.It is very important for the translators to translate these works well.Referring to some materials, the author found that there were few studies on translation of foreign documentary literature. Thus,it is important and necessary to conduct a study concerning this topic.Taking the English-Chinese translation practice of American documentary work Tuesdays with Morrie as an example, the author of this thesis tried to solve problems met in the translation according to the semantic and communicative translation theory by Peter Newmark and further discussed translation strategies of documentary works.According to documentary and literary features, the author suggested that to keep the original meaning and language style,we should adopt semantic translation. However,to deal with difficulties met in translation caused by different grammar rules and culture,we should adopt splitting, regrouping, omitting dashes, and adding annotation ways so as to make the translated version more acceptable and appealing to Chinese readers. The author analyzed translations strategies used in documentary works based on English-Chinese translation practice of American documentary work Tuesdays with Morrie according to the semantic and communicative translation theory and hoped it would provide some reference value for similar documentary translation.
