The report is based on the translation of Mitch Albom's autobiographical documentary novel Tuesdays with Morrie. It analyzes the translation practice of the novel's first, second and last parts as guided by Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, discussing the translation methods and skills in novel translation and how to convey the information of the source text into the target text vividly. This report is composed of five chapters.Chapter One describes the whole translation task in detail, including the source text, writer's information and translation requirements.Chapter Two describes the translation process:pre-translation,during-translation,and proofreading.Chapter Three introduces the guiding theory of the translation practice: functional equivalence theory and its application in novel translation.Chapter Four is the main body of this report, which analyzes the translation cases from lexical level, syntactical level and textual level. It discusses the use of some translation methods such as addition, omission, division, combination, the translation of figures of speech and literal translation.Chapter Five summarizes the experience and limitations of this translation practice.
